Things with a story
A couple of small entrances to the cabin's history. Both of these are things you can still see at Sullishak, and both were photographed at the time the work was done.
The fireplace bricks
The brick hearth under the little black wood stove, and the brick wall behind it, are the fireplace. In 1947 Wes and Elsie hired a brick mason for the one job they would not take on themselves; in 1981 their two older sons took the whole fireplace down brick by brick, and the bricks went back in around the stove that replaced it. Janet Schmidt cleaned most of them.
Wes wrote about it in his newspaper column at the time: "There still is a small stack of uncleaned brick outside the cabin. Inside, however, is a beautiful little black stove sitting on a brick hearth, backed by a brick wall. The room looks half again as large."

The puffin
The puffin is the cabin's mascot. The first one was plaster and, as Dave put it, "had begun to dissolve in the coastal rain." It was replaced during the 2004 roofing job — "while not technically a part of the roofing project," he noted — with a concrete one that "should only require periodic coats of paint to stay presentable."
